Learn Google Analytics – start by learning to track traffic using UTM’s

Chris Mercer is the Google Analytics expert that advanced marketers hunt out when they need help.

He says, “When you’re first starting out and you’re getting your funnels built one of the most important tools you can learn how to use is Google Analytics.

But Google Analytics is overwhelming. There’s a ton of stuff back there that than can get really frustrating if you’re not quite sure what you’re supposed to do with it.

So here’s your Pro Tip.

Start by learning how to track your traffic. The secret to knowing Google Analytics is knowing the things that you don’t know you don’t know, and for most people that’s actually tracking traffic.

You do it using something called UTM’s. Google ‘tracking traffic using UTM’s’ to find out more.

What you can do is tag your different traffic sources that are coming into your website. For example you can tag an email or Facebook traffic. You can even tell whether it was your Facebook ad with kittens or your Facebook ad with puppies that caused your customers to convert or become a lead or whatever it is you’re trying to track.

That is the very first step – learning how to use UTM’s. Then go into your Google Analytics reports and look for your ‘source medium’ report. You’ll see all your different traffic sources there, and you’ll also see the results of those traffic sources.
